Hey everyone.
I'm ready to leave now, but I can't stay silent anymore.

There are things I witnessed as a moderator that I can't stand by or ignore. I tried to believe things would improve, but at some point, staying quiet felt worse than speaking up.

Update: I clarified one point that I worded poorly and that might not have come across the way I intended. When I mention that we were told to ban a certain type of content only if it was very bad, I'm referring specifically to banning the account. Any underage bot was always removed. When I say "ban," I mean banning the entire account that posted the bot.

Update 2: I honestly didn't expect this to get so much attention. I'm genuinely touched by your support, even if we don't know each other or if you've only seen me wearing the "bad cop" hat, haha. I'm a shy little guy, so I wanted to thank you all here directly, it's easier for me than replying to every comment. This document reflects my experience and understanding of internal moderation practices at the time, based on the information available to me. It does not allege intent, motive, or wrongdoing by any individual.

What moderation currently looks like
As of today, the platform has around 125,000 reports waiting to be reviewed, with three active mods (two, now that I'm leaving). I joined the moderation team on December 14, 2024, a little over a year ago. During that time, there were several periods where I was the only active site moderator, with ticket mods helping me when they happened to receive reports on their side.

That workload is not realistic. Even if moderation were a full-time job, no one could keep up with it. Every report requires context checks, evidence, logging, and sometimes discussion. And when you're new, you need to ask questions. The problem is that very often, there was no one to answer them…

Because of that, some reports were never handled. Not because mods didn't care, but because there was no guidance, no framework, and no clear decision to make. Devs don't give us clear instructions. Some of them don't even seem to know their own site's rules.

For months, moderation had no real support, no communication, and no roadmap. Things improved slightly later, but before that, it was a complete mess. That's also why many mods left. Rules change constantly, sometimes overnight. One day we're told something must be banned. The next day, we're asked why we banned it and told we should have only removed it.

So we operate day by day, adapting on the fly, while everything that happens behind the scenes is invisible to users.

Mods end up in the middle of everything. When users complain, devs point at us. When rules are unfair, users blame us.

But we don't make the rules. We only apply them. We have no real decision-making power, yet we take the hits from every side. And that comes with abuse. A lot of it. Death threats, rape threats, doxxing threats, etc, daily.

I asked a former dev to make moderator accounts anonymous and to disable replies to moderation comments, because the harassment was constant. I would log in just to moderate, and the first thing I'd see would be insults or threats. That was often how a workday started.

Mods don't abuse power because we don't really have any. Devs give us a few tools and expect us to deal with the consequences. And at any moment, those same devs can change their minds, reverse decisions, or rewrite rules. We're expected to follow instantly.

Sometimes the rules change, and we learn about it at the same time users do. The difference is that we're still expected to act as if we knew all along, answer questions we don't have answers to, and pretend everything is under control.

At one point, mods raised concerns about the sustainability of the workload and the need for compensation for lead-level responsibilities. Instead of addressing the workload or compensation directly, the proposed solution shifted toward finding a "lower-cost external labor or automated moderation solutions" for those roles. The implication was that existing leads would be expected to train their own replacements without compensation.

This approach raised serious ethical concerns and further reinforced the idea that moderation labor was considered disposable rather than essential.

Moderation is mostly performative
What most people think of as moderation on the platform is, in reality, very superficial. We don't have the tools needed to properly moderate a platform like this.

We can't actually ban users. What we do is closer to a shadowban. A user can no longer publish bots or comments publicly, but their account still works. They can still log in, chat with bots, or create bots privately and use them.

This has serious consequences.

We've banned minors who still have access to the platform. We've banned users for creating CSAM content who can continue doing it privately.

When we "remove" a bot, it isn't deleted. It just becomes unpublishable. Everything moves to private, and moderation has no access to private bots.

That means anyone can create illegal or abusive content in private, and we literally can't see it, stop it, or intervene. We don't even know it exists.

On top of that, mods don't fully control their own actions. We can't unban users. If a mistake happens or if an appeal is legitimate, we have to ask a dev to step in.

So even when moderation wants to fix an error, there's no guarantee it ever will be fixed, unless the user manages to directly DM a dev. I'll come back to that later.

This is why I'm saying moderation is mostly performative.

From the outside, it looks like action is being taken. But in practice, enforcement stops at the public layer. We're given very limited tools, no access to critical parts of the platform to enforce anything in a meaningful way.

What exists is the appearance of moderation.

Hidden rules and opaque guidelines
There are rules users will never see.

Moderation operates with internal rules that are not written anywhere publicly. As mods, we sometimes have rules about what's allowed and what isn't. Users, on the other hand, have no way of knowing.

The public guidelines only cover what is legally safe to say, but many moderation actions are based on rules that simply don't appear anywhere. If you read the guidelines carefully and try to follow them in good faith, you can still end up breaking rules you didn't even know existed.

That's not a user problem. It's a transparency problem.

An example: Sexual abuse themes are allowed in bots. However, sexual abuse toward the user can't appear in the first message. For it to be considered CNC, the user has to be in a position to consent and to withdraw that consent. That means the first message can't already contain the abuse.

You will not find this rule written anywhere in the guidelines. Because it doesn't look good, legally, to spell this out clearly. Saying "this is allowed but only under specific conditions" is legally riskier than staying vague. From a legal standpoint, that protects the platform. From a user standpoint, it creates confusion and punishments without warning.

And that's just one example.

Another common one is bots based on real people or celebrities. Are they allowed? Yes and no. Even mods don't have a clear rule to rely on.

What we do know is that bots based on OnlyFans models and VTubers are removed. Not because of a clear ethical line, but because those creators regularly send DMCA requests, and it becomes a legal issue. For other public figures, there is no consistent answer.

We get a huge number of reports about this. Tags were removed to make this content harder to find. But there are still no clear instructions on how to handle it.

Mods are often accused of being inconsistent. The reality is that the rules themselves are inconsistent, incomplete, or deliberately vague. Some rules we learn on the fly. Some rules we never get a clear answer for. Some rules we know, but are explicitly told not to explain to users.

The result is a system where users are punished for content they had no reasonable way of knowing was against the rules. And mods are stuck enforcing policies they don't control, don't fully understand, and aren't allowed to clarify.

Favoritism and unequal rules
This is probably the part most people care about, so I want to be precise. Infractions are not handled the same way for everyone.

At first, the system was relatively simple. Everyone was treated the same, with one exception: verified creators. When a verified creator broke the rules, mods were required to contact them privately and ask them to fix the issue instead of applying a sanction immediately. Non-verified creators, on the other hand, would receive the penalty right away. That alone already created problems.

Those messages had to be sent from our personal Discord accounts. There was no anonymity, mods were directly exposed. In a recent case, a moderator followed the rules exactly as instructed and ended up being heavily harassed because their personal account was exposed. I won't go into names or details, but this wasn't a mistake, it was the expected outcome of the system.

There's something important to understand here: mods are required to stay silent. We aren't allowed to publicly explain moderation actions. We can't share evidence or clarify what actually happened. Moderation actions are considered private, and we are expected to protect user privacy at all costs.

That creates a very uneven situation. Users are free to say whatever they want publicly. Moderation is not allowed to respond. When mods stay silent, it doesn't mean anything other than we are not allowed to speak.

This is why you've seen situations where creators make public statements about moderation actions, and mods never reply. Not because we don't care or we agree. It's just because we're not allowed to. Meanwhile, mods are expected to absorb harassment, threats, and abuse while staying professional.

Now, about enforcement itself.

At some point, we were told there were too many bans. That was true, especially when I first joined. New directives followed: bans should be avoided whenever possible, except for extreme content or cases involving minors.

Moderation was later restricted from acting on external evidence in cases involving minors. Enforcement was limited to situations where users explicitly stated their age on the platform itself. As a result, mods were often forced to leave accounts active despite credible concerns, unless the user publicly self-identified as a minor on the platform.

One limitation was that creators above a certain follower threshold (at 666 followers, I kid you not) could no longer be banned directly. If you posted bannable content with 500 followers, moderation could act. If you posted the exact same content with 1k followers, moderation had to ask devs for permission. (That permission was never granted.)

So the result is simple: the same violation leads to different outcomes depending on visibility.

And, some of the rules we were asked to apply were vague to the point of being disturbing. For example, we were told to ban CSAM only if it was "very bad."* That raises an obvious question: when does sexualizing a minor become "very bad"? Personally, I believe it's serious the moment it exists, but that wasn't the directive. Rules like this are impossible to apply consistently and put mods in an impossible position.

Underage bots are always removed. When I talk about a ban, it's about the whole account.
Now let's talk about verification.

Originally, verification was handled by mods. Content was reviewed, rules were checked, and once certain criteria were met, a creator could be verified. That changed.

Verification became a discretionary decision made by devs. Content didn't need to be reviewed. Numbers didn't matter. It became a matter of preference.

So here's the contradiction: if follower counts don't matter for verification, why do they suddenly matter for enforcement? An infraction is still an infraction, regardless of who commits it and how many followers they have.

Favoritism exists, not because mods are friends with large creators, but because the system itself limits what mods are allowed to do. Our tools enforce inequality. We are physically blocked from applying the same rules to everyone.

There were also instances where content indicating potential real-world harm (mass shooting) was removed by mods and escalated internally for awareness. In several cases, no response or follow-up occurred, leaving mods without confirmation that the risks had been assessed.

Devs' intervention and overturned moderation decisions
Some users may remember what happened last year with the wave of bans related to bots based on Leland Coyle from Outlast. This character is canonically a former member of the KKK and is explicitly written as racist, antisemitic, and extremist.

I was the moderator who handled that situation.

It started when a creator I knew sent me one of these bots. When I reviewed it and saw explicit references to the KKK, it was immediately clear that this content couldn't stay on the platform. I discussed it with the rest of the moderation team, and everyone agreed. Regardless of the character being fictional, the KKK is a real-world extremist organization responsible for real violence and real deaths. This isn't fictional harm.

Because that first creator was known in the community and hadn't caused issues before, I chose to remove the bot rather than issue a ban, even though a ban would have been justified.

I then checked whether other bots of the same character existed and found around fifty. I informed the moderation team and asked if I could handle them. I was explicitly given authorization to do so. This type of content was considered bannable.

I reviewed every bot manually, and every action was logged. That's how moderation works internally. Actions are reviewable by the rest of the team. If a moderator removes content without justification or outside agreed-upon rules, they are removed from the team. Internal accountability does exist.

Out of those fifty bots, some were only removed. Others, those that explicitly included KKK references, racism, antisemitism, homophobia, or hate-based content, resulted in bans. Around eight accounts were banned, some of which were already inactive at that time.

That same evening, one of the banned creators contacted the devs about it. The devs then asked the moderation team what had happened. I presented the full logs and evidence. The creator denied having written racist or KKK-related content, despite the logs clearly showing otherwise.

The creator continued private conversations with the devs. Shortly after, a decision was made to unban all the accounts involved, including those who never appealed, never contacted anyone, and never disputed the decision.

Some justifications given were things like "I copied the description from Wikipedia" or "I didn't know what the KKK was." One of the creators involved was later found engaging in Nazi roleplay on other platforms.

This is important to state clearly: it takes very little time to understand what the KKK is. This isn't a fictional faction or abstract lore. Real people were murdered. But those accounts were still unbanned.

The entire moderation team agreed with the original actions. The reversals happened solely after private complaints.

This was not an isolated case. We've had minors unbanned despite clear evidence, simply because they contacted devs directly and denied being minors. Moderation then had to re-ban them afterward. Any time someone bypassed normal appeal channels and contacted devs directly, moderation decisions were reversed.

This creates a clear inequality. Users who follow normal appeal processes are often ignored since we don't have the tools to unban them. Users who know how to directly contact devs are far more likely to get decisions reversed.

In some cases, devs communicated one version of events to users and a different one to mods. Mods enforce rules, only to later be publicly undermined. This makes moderation look incompetent or malicious, even when actions were taken correctly. Public opinion of moderation is already hostile. When decisions are reversed without policy changes or internal clarification, mods become scapegoats.

I've personally moderated some of the most disturbing content on the platform, including extreme CSAM and necrophilia. In one case, I banned a rather large creator for one of the most graphic necrophilic bots I encountered. That ban was overturned because the creator claimed they were "going through a hard time" and wanted to create "edgy content."

Decisions like this aren't based on consistent policy. They are based on convenience, emotional responses, and who complains loudly enough.

Mods are then expected to adapt, present these reversals as professional decisions, and absorb the backlash, despite having no control over the outcome.

The image policy and the payment processors
Around February or March last year, mods learned at the exact same time as users that NSFW images would no longer be allowed. We were explicitly told not to say that we learned it at the same time, even though it was obvious. I'll say it clearly now: we found out through the public announcement, just like everyone else.

So overnight, mods were expected to enforce a rule we had just discovered ourselves, and to answer questions we didn't have answers to.

The reason given was that NSFW images have to go so the site can receive payments. On paper, that makes sense. But almost a year later, where are the subscriptions?

The image filter has been adjusted multiple times. Mods have spent countless hours removing images. We've taken a huge amount of harassment for it. And yet, there have been no subscriptions, no clear updates, and no transparency.

I want to add something. I've seen people complain "you can't post porn on a porn site anymore." That comparison doesn't really hold. The platform is not a pornographic website. A porn site is a specific legal category with strict regulations, and that's precisely why those sites can work with payment processors. This site is an AI generation platform. Pornographic content can exist inside bots, but the site itself isn't classified as a porn site. Complaining about porn images being removed here is closer to complaining about not being able to post porn on Facebook.

So for months, moderation enforced these image rules because we were told they were necessary. Then, recently, devs publicly said something very different.

After months of telling mods that NSFW images had to be removed, that the image guidelines were validated, devs publicly stated that if an image passes the automod filter, it's fine.

That means mods spent months enforcing rules we were told were mandatory, only for users to later be told publicly that those same images were actually acceptable all along, as long as they passed the filter.

Once again, mods end up looking abusive, arbitrary, or incompetent when in reality, we were following the instructions we were given.

The filter itself is an AI system. It's not reliable. Some explicit images pass, others don't. There's no clear logic a human can apply consistently. And yet, we were enforcing rules based on that system, without knowing the criteria ourselves.

The worst part is that mods weren't informed of this change. I personally learned that "if it passes the filter, it's okay" through a conversation with someone else. Not internally or officially.

So once again, users are told one thing, mods are told another, and we are left to deal with the confusion and the backlash.

This situation sums up the broader problem very well: poor communication, constant contradictions, and mods enforcing rules that change without warning, sometimes without even being told they've changed.

Why I'm leaving and speaking only now
I'm leaving moderation because I can't keep doing this.

For a long time, I believed in this project. I genuinely did. I loved working with the moderation team. They are good people, and I don't regret working alongside them for a single second. But I reached a point where I can't justify staying.

Moderation on the platform is unpaid. It's volunteer work. We're not employees. In my case, I'm disabled and can't work a traditional job. For me, moderation was my work. I treated it seriously. I spent close to full-time hours doing it for over a year because I cared and I believed it mattered.

If the site hasn't shut down despite the amount of illegal and abusive content that exists, it's because mods remove it. When people say "there's no child exploitation here," that's because mods actively delete it. You don't see it because someone is doing the work.

But the workload is overwhelming, the team is too small, and people burn out. We are exposed to abuse daily, with no protection, no clear structure, and no support. I've seen things every day that felt wrong. I kept telling myself it would improve, things would stabilize, and communication would get better. But it didn't.

There were many moments where I should have left earlier. When I was told to only ban CSAM "if it was very bad." When bans related to extremist content were overturned. When decisions kept changing without explanation.

I stayed because I wanted to believe this project could become something better. I don't believe that anymore.

This post isn't asking you to feel sorry for mods. It's not asking you to like us. It's not even asking you to agree with me. It's about transparency.

Most users never see what happens behind the scenes, but I did. And almost no one ever talks about it.

I'm speaking now because I'm leaving, and because once I'm gone, I have nothing to protect and nothing to gain.

Mods are not decision-makers. We don't act out of spite or personal issues. We try to enforce unclear rules that change constantly, often without being properly communicated. We act as a buffer between user frustration and devs' decisions, without any real protection.

If a moderator gets harassed, threatened, or doxxed, there is no legal or institutional support. I've lost count of how many times people wished me dead for removing bots. That was treated as normal. At one point, we were even told we couldn't remove bots that contained threats against mods.

In one case, a large creator made repeated violent threats toward mods. We asked devs to do something about it. Instead, devs joined that creator's server and politely asked them to stop.

That's the level of protection mods have.

Nothing in this post is meant to justify moderation decisions or excuse mistakes. It's meant to explain how the system actually works, because from the outside, you can't see it.

I'm done pretending everything is fine. That's why I'm leaving, and I'm saying this now.

I'll just put this in pin comment too.
So after more than a day and the discord going into lockdown and all the screenshots and googledocs I have formed a more informed opinion on the situation, and it is that shep is actually just unfathomably based and reasonable.Im thankful and grateful he built janitor and provides it for all users for free, the mods that have disagreements are free to leave, no need to crash out, also storing screenshots from 2023 is ultra cringe petty and immature, why wouldn't the mods make it public before if they were so worried.Internal disputes shouldn't be turned into public drama and a smear campaign against the site devs and shep. Still I don't think janitor should police users private chats or bots, and shadow banning csm accounts is better than completely banning, reason is if they get banned they will just be able to make a new account. Also according to eu law it is illegal to store users private data they didn't consent to give access contractually.

I've seen some say "nothing is truly private on the internet." Well, duh.. I think most of us know this. In this day and age people still value privacy, surprise! And like you said, most users on here have embarrassing chats.

Just because "nothing is private" doesn't mean it can't be avoided. It's not an excuse to invade it willingly. With a site like this, you'll always have the problem of the real freaks of the earth to come out. That's just how it is. You can't keep up with them all, basically unavoidable.

Putting other users privacy at risk because of those freaks is ridiculous. That sort of stuff can lead to blackmail and shaming. Honestly, who cares what someone does with a private bot, nobody sees it, it can't harm anyone if it was never public to begin with.

What if I want to roleplay with a KKK character to mess with him ? That's not necessarily because I agree with the views of that character. That's dumb.

Reguarding CSAM, I do agree that CSAM content should be banned.

however saying anything that fall a little bit into it should be banned is wrong. Because depending on the mod, it can apply to many scenarios where a character look or behave young. Just look at those that consider any anime female character CSAM.

It isn't that simple. because we're not talking about real CSAM, CSAM is supposed to be about real children.

Trying to completly ban an account for private bots is like trying to prevent someone of writing a piece of fiction on a piece of paper at his home.

In the end, I don't think it should be the role of moderators to handle such things but of investigator. As this type of content is a clue that could lead investigator to discover real CSAM.

I'm not a mod or a dev, so I don't have the whole picture. However since the whole collective shout debacle, I'm doubtfull about the way at least some mods go. And that whole KKK character situation seems to indicate youre part of them.

Though I get that the dev behaviour is problematic too according to youre testimony.

There's seem to be a lot of problems with the devs and creators. But you're also problematic and creators and users are legitimate to be angry at you.

Let me get this straight. The mods were "advised to permit some forms of CSAM content as long as it was deemed it 'not too bad' by either them or the devs personally. Therefore, inevitably in some instances where CSAM content was discovered, little to no action was taken against it to comply with orders given by supervisors" Sorry, but that just screams criminal accomplice. 😬

As soon as you're in possession of CSAM content, it's no longer a case of what you were and were not allowed to keep up on the website. It is a federal crime, one that is entirely in your responsibility to report that to the authorities regardless of your rank. To my knowledge, what the devs did was dictate what mods could and could not remove from the site itself, what they can never do was deter the anyone from reporting a felony as serious as this. So why the decision was made to keep the situation in the dark for 3 entire years is incredibly concerning.

I am not trying to suggest that any of the mods are lying, or downplay their experiences or completely shift the blame, because at the end of the day, the mods did deserve so much more than the treatment they endured. But I cannot pretend that I don't believe there's either more to this than what is being let on, or the mods are still partially at fault for the fact that harmful content had remained on this site for so long.

And I believe that the mods certainly have been through a lot, but that doesn't allow them to not admit their own wrongdoings. Yes the harrasment has been a lot, I've seen it for myself, and that is totally on US as the user's, and the mods worded it like it was Shep's fault that they were being harrased. I think both sides are at fault but Shep handled it much more professionally then the Mod that put out the document. And ofcourse they didn't take in account for the stuff Shep must've been doing in the background, and yes that's probably because of the transperancy issue, but it's most likely that they only "Shadowbanned" the CSAM content because the content would be passed onto the federal agencies for investigation and a Shadowban prevents the CSAM "poster" to not realise it, as if known they could request for their data to be removed from JAI and Shep and the devs would have to comply. Anyways, I'm just glad that there are people still here. I love this site, it has helped me through my years.] Still, just an opinion. If I'm wrong, feel free to send a reply to this.

As an ex mod to spicychat who had to make a very similar post to this against that site, I'm not sure if it will offer you any comfort but externally it does seem jai has made a much better response and has addresssed accountability so far to a much better  degree than spicy even tried to. Will be waiting to see actual action going forward to back the statements of course, but actually responding to the concerns of mods (even if it ends up being late to do so) rather than purely trying to cover things up does make me hopeful at the very least.
I hope your statement will spark change and improvement, and I am wishing upon you a time where you will be able to separate from all the stress this has caussd you.

It is so unfair how something isn’t heard until it’s over. I myself had no idea there was such an internal conflict between moderation, I actually just assumed it was all the AI.

I am deeply sorry you’ve had such a toxic experience online and that’s this break allows you to be freed from the confines of this horrible situation. Every point you’ve made puts a nail in the coffin. Your hard work is appreciated.

For such a project you’d expect developers to use their expertise and skills to create the safe space mods needed when designing their shit-ass server. VOLUNTEERS SHOULD NOT BE EXPECTED TO WORK.

Not having a solid plan, transparency with the staff team, and a clear understanding of rules and regulations is a massive mistake on their behalf.

I'm going to say it respecfully as I can. I do think it’s important to remember that, as users, we don’t have the authority or the training to handle serious internal conflicts or sensitive topics like CSAM, racism, or other safety issues.

It’s totally valid to vent and share your experience, but many of these situations are complex and are best handled by moderators and devs who have the tools, knowledge, and legal responsibility to manage them safely. For the rest of us, reading about these things can be uncomfortable, but we have to trust that the people in those roles are taking the proper steps.

With the Discord shutdown and the community panicking, I’d advise users taking care of yourselves and stepping away from these issues if it becomes too much.

well... in the end, the prophecy just confirms it self, I remember back on 2024, when the whole "No more NSFW images" thing started, from there on, is where Jai's downfall even started... (from my pov, could've began sooner)

I remember it was around after the site started to constantly crash, users peaked, and as such, we could only wait in lines to chat with our bots

I remember clearly, on the Jai subreddit, many people always asked for transparency, anything, all they wanted, was to knows what was happening, and what they were going to do, they wanted to feel included as a community

But we never got answers, some from moderators yes, but few, and as you can see why (if you read the document), since they never had much options neither, either they couldn't, or they... didn't know how to

I even remember when instead of fixing their servers, or being transparent they... put us to play doom, and thought "alright alright stay in your place, idk play some games while you wait"

This is very deliberate attempt at trying to shift all the blame from moderators to the developers, moderators aren't some saints either.

Look I am not trying to defend anyone here, I completely agree that there should be zero threats towards the moderators, thats awful and yes there should be more communication between moderators and developers.

But at the same time it is a known fact that moderators absolutely do abuse their powers and moderators are very biased as well, its not just the developers like how you are trying to make it look.

Chats of moderators have been released, there one can clearly see the moderators view on User's privacy not being much important, saying moderators should have access to everything private of Users, moderators do not care about User's privacy.

This is a very clear and intentional breach of User's privacy in the disguise of "protecting children, we are doing it for their safety" by the moderators.

Yes developers have done other things badly sure, but they are absolutely correct in not allowing moderators to see the private stuff of users, they keep the private stuff of User's private.

And another point, you said that someone was harassing you so you told the developers and the developers joined the chats of the that person and asked them to stop, and you said "thats the kind of support moderators get from developers" but is that not a pretty appropriate action by the developers in this kind if situations ?

I think you're trying to shift the blame from the moderators to the developers. It's common knowledge, and it's been repeatedly stated, that the moderators ABUSE their power. And it's not just the developers. I'm not defending Shep and his terrible communication; he continues to make mistakes. But claiming the moderation wasn't biased? I'm sure that's a lie.

The part that irritated me the most was the lack of transparency in rules and guidelines, especially as a DD creator, to learn that abuse/illegal activity that is a wildly popular topic for angst and DD bots isn’t allowed on the intro and can result in punishment without even making it known that it’s an issue is just ???? This is very sad news, I have been following this community from the beginning. Starting from this site having a limited system until it grew to be as big as it is now with many extraordinary creators. English is not my mother tongue so sorry if it has bad grammar,and I'm also not the type to follow discord or whatever because I admit it's a bit complicated for me (a bit off lol).

I just hope that in the future this platform can correct its mistakes and make it a big lesson for the future. I know it's not easy and it will definitely take a long time because of the damage.But I believe this community has a strong sense of mutual cooperation, Therefore, I have high hopes that everything will return to normal. Because after all, Janitor has become my second home, and I've spent so much time here to fill my empty days. I truly love this community.

Speaking as mere user (not the creator of any sort), the hardest thing for me was actually the way the mods were treated by the same community I was in for more than a year. I can't imagine going through harassment DAILY just for the sake of some website, even if one I care about. That's gross. I know web communities are places for many weirdos as an axiom, not that it was expected any other way, but the ignorance from the devs to AT LEAST give you guys privacy is so weird. Isn't that how basic rules should work? Isn't it something you consider in first place when opening a public resource with prearmed moderation? Crazy.

Seriously ive started chatting with everyones most and least favorite ai assistant cuz jani has just started feeling so off. Every since that one point early last year when that one large creator posted against jani mods for what, in my personal opinion, read like the creator being on an absolute power trip. It feels like the entire experience of jani has just gone down from there. Not inherently because of mods, but because of dev inconsistencies and creators themselves. I always try to see both sides of a situation, and the way things with jani have no transparency or consistency just makes it so hard to understand all points of view, because some peoples pov is hardly there if even at all given the revelations here. Jani became a safe space for me when i found it in 2024. Now it just feels like the same old shiz just a different day with worsening stank...

Yes, basically anything you make and let public will always be up, even if you delete everything or privatize that specific bot, if somebody have a chat with that bot it's still possible to chat with them. You can even see the original images the creator put in the og description, even if they took it out.

It helped me because they were some good/interesting bots that were deleted for some reason. But thinking about it, all this could also be used for bad, and the fact that what you make public can't be deleted and that it's still somehow accesible to someones' is nuts.

I few times deleted chats/bots, and i was able to chatting with it if chat was opened on other device 
And it's reappeared after that on every device and account
It was half year ago, i even then noticed like something is "off"
But i continued because i don't know which alternative i have 😖
In official disco any questions about alternatives got ban, and on discord whole, i dunno how to formulate... Horde of moders who upset when you send pic with your kitty in general chat because they have chat for chat for chat for category for chat
I know why they doing it, but it punching off any need to text in these discord 
Because it watched closely and even when you behave upu can be scolded

And if site have, fuck, just TWO moderators now, it's fucking disgusting. I'm shocked about it.

What a completely depressing state of affairs.

As someone who is out of the loop, who just uses chatbots for fun and go about my life, create a few bots now and then, who doesn't partake in Discord or Reddit... what a polarizing discovery this is.

Whilst not entirely surprising, at least not the favouritism part and bias in selective rules applying to certain people and the image censorship, but three (now two, maybe none now) active moderators for a website that gets 2000+ new bots, everyday, is laughable. And the fact that the team is so small to begin with, and not even employed or even made aware of changes to the TOS or any form of communication from upper management is tragic.

I experienced this as well. The environment is driven by ego. I volunteered as a ticket moderator because I genuinely cared about JanitorAI, but it became a deeply negative experience. I was mistreated and humiliated without any clear reason.

The system itself is fundamentally broken. Leadership is indifferent, the rules are unclear, and instructions are inconsistent or simply nonexistent. You’re expected to handle an overwhelming workload, often replying to tickets in languages you don’t even speak, without proper guidance or context.

Frankly, the ticket system makes little sense. There is no reliable documentation—everything depends on a template that can become obsolete at any moment. Sometimes changes are communicated, sometimes they aren’t. You’re handed tickets with comments like “good luck with this,” as if you had any real authority, which you don’t.

What you’re actually given is exposure: exposure to frustrated users, backlash, and an egocentric, dehumanizing chain of command. Responsibility without power, accountability without protection.

I’ve been on this site since 2023 and wow, it’s so sad to see its downfall like this. While i have noticed the inconsistency with moderation i always assumed it was just incompetence when in reality it was just three (and ONE at one point?!)  people not even getting paid to moderate a site that has (thousands, millions?) of users; that’s insane and so irresponsible and shitty of the devs(?) to even attempt to do. I give you my deepest condolences, i cannot imagine how stressful it is to try and moderate a site like this without any help or any compensation. Anyways, i hope if you do moderator for anything else you actually get compensated and the support you need, and if not, then i wish you the best in whatever you do pursue.

I really like Outlast, I like how Red Barrels portrays their characters and their comics on their official website, it's a very tense atmosphere. But,  I honestly don't understand at all why people want to romanticize the characters in Outlast, like... all the characters have a messed up background, some with disturbing childhood stories, and for people to want to take a character like Coyle, who's a racist jerk, full of problematic speeches and actions, and romanticize that is bizarre. Outlast isn't meant to be romanticized; the game has a lot of heavy themes and is even based on that secret MK Ultra project from the CIA.

True, I think some of the most important parts of characters are looked over just because they are attractive. I enjoy reading about each character whether they’re a prime asset or expop. While I see the appeal of romanticizing a character just because they’re appealing to the eye, most common examples I’ve seen are Coyle and Liliya. I can’t lie I do have my favorites but that also doesn’t mean I like their upbringing (like Coyle)

I also have my favorites, but I particularly like the protagonists much more, lol. Especially in Outlast 1 and the Whistleblower DLC, Miles and Waylon will always be my favorites, but I know that the prime assets have characteristics that people are attracted to, and I believe that the voice actor's voice helps a lot in the work. I, for example, love the voices of the characters, the prime assets. And as you said, Coyle and Liliya are generally the characters that people, for some reason, are most attracted to, just like people had a fixation on Eddie the fiancé from Outlast Whistleblower. But it's basically impossible to romanticize Outlast; in my head, it's simply not possible, given how everything is quite heavy and intense in the game.

What is BEYOND me is how a website with this many users can operate with so little management structure. Voluntary work is fine up to a point, but when it turns into full-time hours with real responsibilities and no compensation, it stops being a hobby. In my view, developers should be able to stay focused on development and keeping the site running, while moderation, user communication, issue handling, and bans are handled by mods. That separation just makes things clearer and more sustainable for both sides. On top of that, there should be clear and regular communication between devs and mods. Even a short daily check-in or call, half an hour or so, would go a long way toward sharing updates, answering questions, and avoiding misunderstandings. For something this important, that doesn’t seem unrealistic. Still, I want to thank the mods for carrying this for so long, and I’m genuinely sorry you had to deal with so much stress and harassment. You didn’t deserve that. This situation should be a serious wake-up call for the devs, and I really hope it leads to real action going forward.

Most online moderation positions are "voluntarily" meaning you signed up for a certain amount of pay and they dont have to go over that, they just cant go under it.

In the case of janitor mods I believe they were never promised payment(? unsure since I only really moderated on a large scale once for a 50k+ member discord server.) so they can't really pursue any legal action.

I really thought this place was maintained by a huge group of mods. I mean, how are they going to maintain a site where thousands of users interact daily? I see that your job was really complicated, both psychologically and physically. You really did a great job enduring all that torment for so long. You literally take care of the place... and there's no pay? No security? And worst of all, no respect for you. I saw how several creators got irritated when their bots were taken down from the platform, and it really bothered me (especially knowing that most of the content here is 18+), but reading this made me reconsider things. First of all, as a user I am so sorry that you have had to go through this. Moderators are an essential role and being unpaid and unprotected with a tiny team and a confusing work environment is not easy and will never be. I’ve always been curious about the mods, because some people paint them as evil and abusive, and others are just chill about them. I honestly think mods do the best they can. There’s a lot of bad people who will do bad things, and it makes it even worse when the Devs paint themselves as these pure figures with a dream and the mods are like these snakes that are meant to poison the water when it appears that’s not true. I DO advise however that you detach yourself however much you can, make an anonymous account, get a VPN, anything you haven’t already done to protect yourself online. Mods have been mistreated all this time by the devs, being overworked for hours unpaid, dealing with all sort of harrassment and receiving orders like no banning accounts of minors if they say they aren't minors despite proof and accounts that posted csam unless it's "very bad". There are currently 2 mods that handle reports in a site with thousands of users increasing every day. Also favoritism, rules aren't applied equally, verified users get a warning and less popular users get directly banned for breaking vague rules. Mods get notified of rule changes at the same time as users, so something that wasn’t banned before has to be now and viceversa and yet they get criticized by the devs that stated those rules/changes in first place. Mods have been mistreated all this time by the devs, being overworked for hours unpaid, dealing with all sort of harrassment and receiving orders like no banning accounts of minors if they say they aren't minors despite proof and accounts that posted csam unless it's "very bad". There are currently 2 mods that handle reports in a site with thousands of users increasing every day. Also favoritism, rules aren't applied equally, verified users get a warning and less popular users get directly banned for breaking vague rules. Mods get notified of rule changes at the same time as users, so something that wasn’t banned before has to be now and viceversa and yet they get criticized by the devs that stated those rules/changes in first place. There are also secret rules that mods aren't allowed to share with users and can get them shadowbanned.

Not that it matters anyway, LLMs have guardrails that blocks that content to begin, so it'd be pointless to make a pro-racist bot, so jailbreaks are largely ineffective.

I understand it on the basis of legality purposes to avoid regions with overreach as far as what content goes on a site given it doesn't have section 230 protections, but fearing content just empowers it.

The reason people say it is going to die within the next couple of weeks is because once all the mods are out, the sites servers will eventually fail and crash. In other words, without anyone watching, the site will crash due to glitches being left to  get worse. Plus the community will move on pretty quickly. (This is based off previous experiences with sites that had similar problems as Jan.ai)

After reading all of this, I finally realize how truly worrying is the situation. The system they expected you and the team to follow is straight shit. First, you can't expect a little team to moderate a whole site. Second, the devs should do a better job at providing security for their moderation team AND to provide the exact rules and updates before releasing them to the public (as said in the NSFW images point). And last, favouritism should be unnacceptable, no matter how big a creator is. Even if there is illegal content in private, it should worry the devs to have someone like that in the platform, both for the reputation and image of the site, and to provide a safer environment to the community. It's just ethically bad to accept the abuse the team suffers as something "normal", to ban the content only if it's "very bad".

Was really interested in the whole legal situation of it as a CS admirer.

The situation sounds like a vicious Inconsistent Triad (basically a triangle of contradiction if you aren’t a Philosopher): 1. Mods does their moderation task leading to a justified ban. 2. User is banned and contacts Dev. 3. Due to Dev’s higher position and personal preference plus a few other justifiable grey area of reasons the User is unbanned, leading to abuse from users to mod.

Nevertheless, I hope your mental health is prioritised and looked after.

Two out of the three of my favorite creators have left the platform today (one had their account deleted), and they were genuinely one of the only reasons I even stayed here. I've been here for just over a year, but seeing how mods are treated here and how many disgusting p*do bots are around despite even the mods saying to quit, I'm not sure I can continue engaging with this platform much longer. To be completely honest, the only reason I even stay on this platform is because of my own roleplays and the UI for making characters, but I'm not even sure that's enough anymore. It sucks to see everyone leaving J.ai at the same time, but it might just be needed to make the devs listen

Can't say I'm surprised tbh. Four or six months later after the image filter and subscription announcement I knew there was something rotten in jai but I didn't know exactly what. The disconnect and constant contradictions spoke of an internal problem, at least to me. 
A shame really, and to those who said jai would end up as c (ai), you were too hopeful.

hi! starting this with saying that I do feel bad for you and the other mods. the situation you all were in was and Is horrible and it should’ve never happened. however, the fact that you are conflating ai chatbots to csem is incredibly wrong. unless there is a real life minor being harmed, it is not csem. l・li\sh・ta content, as bad as it can be, is not csem. bots of high schoolers are not csem. created bots, no matter the content of them, are not csem. they are not illegal, nor can they be, solely for the fact that no real people are being harmed by the creation or comsumption of it.

i also do think the minor problem was the best way it could’ve gone. and this is not saying that minors should be on this site, the main use of it is for nsfw (even if this isn’t / technically / a pornsite) which, obviously minors shouldn’t use, but you can’t ban someone off the assumption or ‘vibes’ that they might be a minor. the only way to be certain in a user’s age is if they provide some form of proof, otherwise adults could be banned under the guise of seeming too childlike, which is a whole other thing in itself.

again, these are just my personal thoughts and even if i can’t fully relate to the issues of being a moderator, i do hope you’re doing well and can get into a better place outside of all the harassment you or other mods were sent.

Told someone in the "JanitorAI refugee" sub about that  and they completely blew me off like i was lying. Saying "it's never had that content before".

Also the devs must be panicking because i can't say the CS word even though i could earlier. They trying to tamper with the comment moderation system to prevent backlash. Pussy move.

I've known since I joined this community a year or two ago that the moderation was taken too lightly. Unpaid labor can only last for so long. Especially with the ridiculous expectations and abuse thrown on you all. Its understandable why you would leave. This project got too big too fast. The Devs didn't think this far ahead, nor did they think this place would stay popular for so long. Nobody involved is a true professional, they didn't have admin roles like a project manager, an overseer, anything. Its just people who believe in something, trying to make it happen. You guys did your best and honestly y'all were awesome. Its a shame that they took you for granted for so long, but this needed to happen. This was not sustainable and I'm glad that they're finally going to make some real, lasting changes as they get bigger. Thank you for your time and dedication, your work meant so much to many of us.

As a fellow creator, when the rule about using pictures came out I was on vacation and didn’t know. It was summer 2024 and even though the character was aged up you couldn’t use their picture from they were teens (for me it was Gojo in S2), and this lovely moderator messaged me and even gave me extra time to fix my images and was so understanding. The moderator had made such an effort to reach out to me and I appreciated it so much. I don’t understand how some of the creators can be so cruel and step down to send death threats etc to mods, even though they are given extra time and chance to fix things. I’m so sorry to hear about your experience and situation. I wish you nothing but the best. Take care of yourself ❤️

I was honestly glad that nsfw pictures got removed. it made me feel weird whenever I opened the site and the first thing I saw was an exposed genital (no thanks).

I really hope this all fixes itself since it's the best ai website I ever used, both in freedom for bot creating and with how immersive the roleplays can be. I don't enjoy websites that limit me to what is allowed to be said in a fictional chat, or even getting monitored without my knowledge.

I genuinely wish for this to get a good ending and not get shut down, but if it will then I guess there's nothing that can be done.

Yes, I know I've been one of those who's talked trash about the mods on several occasions. But in the back of my mind, I always had a feeling that the situation was perhaps more messed up than it seemed at first glance.

To be honest, this site has enormous potential, but it's run and managed like absolute garbage. I'm only here because NSFW is allowed (within reason, obviously), but I always say to myself that being here is sometimes a real pain in the ass.

I don't completely take back what I've sometimes said to the mods, but now I can understand them better and sympathize with them.

God, so much has happened within a day and I was not expecting it. I'm probably one of the few users who are still gonna stay on J.AI until it actually competely burns to the ground, or something happens that shuts it down cause I still have attachment to my roleplays with bots. And a lot of other chatbot sites either bore me, or require spending money. First of, words including children or pictures (in a sexual way) is not "CSAM" and it´s not illegal in the US where the site is based on (otherwise you would have to report it to the authorities). Simply making a child char (with no sexual action describe) is not illegal anywhere in the world, and once again, isn´t "CSAM." You are cheapening the term - as evidenced by the fact that it´s not clear what kind of material was or was not removed from your post. If I make a char who has a small kid, and the kid´s personality is described in the personality, I didn´t make a CSAM bot. It´s not actually easy to find a piece of space online where *depicting* a *fictional* children is banned. And yes, it´s against the rules, which just shows how arbitrary and nonsensical the rules of this site has become. I personally have no need to create or engage with children bots, but the reasons why these bots are banned just illustrates the flawed reasoning (more below), which is one of the reasons this site is headed where it´s headed. Now this post is not directed to you personally, but it is connected to what you are talking about in your post. Making any coherent ruleset the way the mod teams and owners of this site approach it is not possible. You are curating a "safe space" for people who spend substantial amounts of times on discord keeping their sensitivities in mind, you are not curating a space where creators can freely express themselves while not worrying about being banned out of the blue. This site might not be a porn site (is reddit or twitter a porn site btw?), but it has rules stricter than any fanfic site, or frankly in some specific aspects (while not others) than majority of sites on the internet. You ever wondered why having a slave is fine but roleplaying as, idk, a soldier in war in Ukraine isn´t? Flawed reasoning is why (more below).

Sorry, guys, but you're going overboard in the comments. I FULLY AGREE that CSAM is unacceptable. But everything else is nonsense. On a site where you can use proxies with third-party models, that's nonsense.
Let me clarify: As someone who spent the last year 70% creating model-restricting prompts and only 30% roleplaying, I can confidently say that it doesn't matter what you moderate here. Moreover, even completely "good" bots (without controversial content in the description) and the lack of roleplay direction towards controversial topics, when managed by proxies, can produce truly shocking content (Deepseek R1 a striking example, you know, I think many users will understand what I mean).
Ultimately, anyone who wants controversial topics will find a way. Those who don't want to can still encounter problems using proxies, because AI responses are often uncontrolled even by descriptions and prompts.
The site shouldn't encourage truly illegal behavior, but if I MYSELF WANT TO BE THE VICTIM of a noncon plot, you shouldn't give a damn. If I want a historical roleplaying game or a roleplaying game against a bot with "incorrect" views, whom I'll consider an enemy for those views, you shouldn't give a damn.

It’s sound that you’re not just staying quiet and you're actually writing things down so the bystanders of this "wonderful" site know what’s been going on with you and this site. Personally, I haven’t seen the mods mess up yet. I’ve reported stuff like child exploitation and the bot got binned off pretty quick, so they are looking into it.

But I’m with you - it’s a joke that they refuse to delete the whole account. That kind of person shouldn’t have any place here. People can do what they want, but there are proper red lines you just can't cross. It’s not a laugh, and the moderation definitely needs to fix up or they need to hire more staff.

Otherwise, these weirdos are just gonna keep exploiting things and we can’t spend all day reporting them. Give 'em a strike system like the blu app. Two or three strikes and you're sent to the 'broken village' - no more making bots for you. Seems like a solid way to keep people from doing that weirdass stuff.

So in summary,the mods just want to enforce more and more stricter censorship and have more and more power over banning users over fictional rp scenarios,and the devs understandably want to keep it as free for users with minimal censorship and mod powers,so the mods rally the whole community against the site devs and play the good guys who are just treated extremely unfairly.The mods are the ones creating this whole drama and stoking negative feelings from the community towards the site,they are just hell bent on getting their way or take down the site if they don't get to control how the site should be run.
Reddit mods should just stay in Reddit instead of trying to ruin the whole internet for the rest of us,oh well when and if they achieve their goal and sanitize the site and make it unusable and ban users, there's always alternatives we can move to.

So after more than a day and the discord going into lockdown and all the screenshots and googledocs I have formed a more informed opinion on the situation,and it is that shep is actually just unfathomably based and reasonable.Im thankful and grateful he built janitor and provides it for all users for free,the mods that have disagreements are free to leave,no need to crash out,also storing screenshots from 2023 is ultra cringe petty and immature,why wouldn't the mods make it public before if they were so worried.Internal disputes shouldn't be turned into public drama and a smear campaign against the site devs and shep.Still I don't think janitor should police users private chats or bots, and shadow banning csm accounts is better than completely banning,reason is if they get banned they will just be able to make a new account.Also according to eu law it is illegal to store users private data they didn't consent to give access contractually.

Even with your limited tools and actions being cockblocked, you still make asinine decisions on the things you can do.

On the section about that shit with the users complaing about NSFW images not being allowed on a porn site

Honestly, I am pissed too. The image rules came from the dev side, justified by "payment processor requirements." Mods didn't come up with them, we were just told they were mandatory for the site to survive financially, so we enforced them. We did that for months while being told subscriptions were coming, but we never got real updates, explanations, or results. Where are the subscriptions devs talked about for months? Nowhere. So yeah, I'm not saying users were wrong to complain about the image policy, I'm complaining about it too. We enforced a rule we were told was necessary for nothing

Thanks for telling us how it works behind the scenes, man! Personally, I didn't socialise with discords at all, only posting my bots there, same with janitor. But yeah, it was a shock to me that nsfw was forbidden from the site so suddenly too. The confusion was bigger when I could see bots where there are futa dicks over the whole bot main picture while revealing dresses are out 😭🙏

Anyway, I'm glad someone has spoken finally. It's horrible to treat people like you like this. Personally, I wouldn't stay so long with this treatment, you guys are something else after all!

I personally exchanged messages with lead moderation about how a big creator had made a bot about a mentally disabled person, that legally can not give consent, as the character was described as being literally not able to understand what sex is because of them being mentally impaired. And I was told by two mods. That wasn't a problem and they insisted I was complaining about it being ntr, even though I never said anything about that. You guys literally have already condoned things that are not iffy or maybe bad. But straight up the abuse of the mentally disabled. And that behind the very lame excuse of not being against terms.  Which is a straight up lie , because it is simply statutory rape. Out of three mods. What are the chances that you are one of them?

I'm not sure if you're talking about the bot I have in mind. There was a bot about a young girl being mentally impaired that was removed, then reposted and removed again (or possibly the account was banned, I'm not entirely sure since it was months ago). So I'm not certain if that's the one you're referring to. That said, I don't mind talking about mod actions now and can share what I know. I'm not a mod anymore and I don't care about protecting anyone or anything at this point. If a bot has a mentally impaired character who can't give consent, then yes, it has to be removed no matter what. So if the bot you're talking about is still up, that's clearly a problem from the mods and not the devs here. We never specifically protected NTR when it has content against the rules like raceplay or incest

No. It was a about a wife described as so dumb she doesn't understand the difference fiction, like acting, from reality. The description of os someone being mentally disabled. Which can't give consent by law. I was answered as if I ever mentioned ntr. Which I never complained about it. And was told that it wouldn't be removed because my " complaint" about ntr was invalid. The bot was left up.  It still is.  My point about how it's the law on most Western countries including the USA, that a person must be fully aware of what sex is and it's consequences to be able to give consent was never addressed.

Deleted my previous comment and instead I'm gonna be forward about my own personal opinions.

I still hold the sliver of hope and anticipation from the dev teams that they will eventually get on the right path and develop this website for the better.

That aside, I hope this post would eventually serve as a foundation for the rest of the Dev's wake-up call. And that they can only go so far with no proper communication without any tangible consequences. Lack of transparency with a community as big as J.AI now would only descend into chaos. Especially since now that the community itself has noticed this behavior.

A tl;dr on the whole post in case people don’t have access to either platform: 
- “We’re working to improve communication” (promised for 3ish years now)
- Still making a point to say that “a handful of things” Mikale said is incorrect 
- Doubling down that all CSAM and creators were banned if discovered (we know it’s not true because accounts were left up and only bots were deleted)
- [paraphrasing] ‘I know communication is bad, we just grew too quickly’ (it was a problem even back in 2023/early24)
- the quoted line from comment above, despite shep basically admitting in the AMA he’s not very involved and doesn’t know a lot of things so what exactly is he stepping back from?

It’s nothing that hasn’t been said before, all in all. Basically the same exact promises that have been broken time and time again every time they’ve been made

shit goes downhill eversince the impletement the NSFW images is not allowed. it was really abitrary in the 1st place, and it was really bad. to think that mods actually volunteering on this work without getting paid and only 3 of them working against thousands of degenerates in this side is wild!

The Devs are cowards for having unpaid mods and not protecting them at all. they told them to uphold the arbitrary laws they made but they did not protect the mods is so fkd up. this site is doomed!

Update: I clarified one point that I worded poorly and that might not have come across the way I intended. When I mention that we were told to ban a certain type of content only if it was very bad, I'm referring specifically to banning the account. Any underage bot was always removed. When I say "ban," I mean banning the entire account that posted the bot.

Update 2: I honestly didn't expect this to get so much attention. I'm genuinely touched by your support, even if we don't know each other or if you've only seen me wearing the "bad cop" hat, haha. I'm a shy little guy, so I wanted to thank you all here directly, it's easier for me than replying to every comment. I'm honestly feeling much better about leaving now, and I have support around me ^^ Making bots has been a hobby of mine for a while, and I'll have more free time now to start anew and go back to what I initially loved. Once again, thank you everyone! Even with all the bad stuff, I truly hope you'll all do what you want and what really matters to you. ❤️

Honestly it just seems like you were out of your depth and it was deeply unserious of the devs to have THREE people moderating what is essentially one of the most degenerate niches of the modern internet with a growing userbase. I'm sorry you were overworked, but at the same time I can't agree with the statements on your discord mocking users who value privacy. AI chatbots are, by nature, embarassing dogshit you'd never want to talk to anyone about. One can be pro-privacy and anti-CSAM at the same time, there's no contradiction here. 
Let's hope the future direction of the site allows it to survive.
