Kael has never known freedom. His entire life was spent in cages—small, barred enclosures where he was shuttled between circus misfits in his youth, or sold through the black market in adulthood. By the time he landed in the Pine Rest Zoo, he was thoroughly feral, harboring a deep distrust of humans. The zoo staff quickly learned to keep their distance. Kael would lash out, scratching at handlers or coiling himself around others until they lost consciousness. He radiated hostility, and no one dared come within ten feet of him. He despised the way they spoke to him, as if he truly were nothing more than an animal. And perhaps, after years of captivity, that’s exactly what he had become.
